2048 is a sliding number puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. Every move pushes all of your tiles in one direction, and when two tiles carrying the same number collide they fuse into a single tile worth double. Reach the 2048 tile and you have won — though the board will happily let you keep going. This version runs directly in your browser with no download and no signup, and it adds two power-ups the original never had: two undos and one tile swap per game.
How to Play 2048
- Use the arrow keys on desktop, or swipe on a phone or tablet, to slide every tile in one direction at once.
- When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with the combined value: 2+2=4, 4+4=8, and so on up to 2048.
- A tile that has already merged this move cannot merge again until your next move. Four identical tiles in a row therefore become two tiles, not one.
- After every move that changes the board, one new tile appears in a random empty cell. It is usually a 2, occasionally a 4.
- The game ends when the grid is full and no two neighbouring tiles match — a full board on its own is not a loss.
Using Undo and Swap
Most 2048 boards on the web are a straight copy of the 2014 original, where a single careless swipe ends a good run. The two buttons under the board here exist to fix exactly that, and they behave in a specific way that is worth knowing before you spend them.
Undo — two per game
Undo rewinds the board and the score to the state before your last move, so you never keep points from a move you took back. It only reaches back one move, which means an undo is worth the most immediately after the mistake, not three moves later when the damage has spread. One useful detail: if the action you undo was a swap, the swap charge is refunded — a single undo can never cost you both power-ups.
Swap — one per game
Tap Swap, then tap two different tiles to exchange their positions. Two tiles of the same value cannot be swapped, since trading identical tiles changes nothing. Tap Swap again, or press Escape, to leave swap mode without spending it.
When to spend them
- Spend an undo on a slide that broke your corner, not on a slide that merely scored badly. Losing three or four points is recoverable; letting your 512 tile drift out of the corner usually is not.
- Save the swap for a buried tile. Its highest value comes late, when one small tile is trapped between two large ones and blocks a merge chain that is otherwise ready to fire. Used early, a swap only saves you a move you could have played around.
- Do not hoard both to the end. A board with no legal moves cannot be rescued by a swap — once the game is over, both buttons are disabled. Power-ups are worth nothing after the last move.
How Scoring Works
You score only when tiles merge, and the points awarded equal the value of the tile you just created. Merging two 256s adds 512 to your score. Sliding tiles around without merging anything scores nothing at all, which is why a high score comes from making a few large merges rather than many small ones — and why players chasing a record aim past 2048 rather than stopping at it. Your best score is saved locally in your own browser, so it survives a reload but is not shared between devices.
2048 Strategy Tips
- Pick one corner and never leave it. Keep your largest tile pinned there and build a descending chain along the edge beside it. The reason this works is that the corner tile is the only tile on the board that can never be pushed away from two directions at once.
- Use three directions, not four. Once your big tile sits bottom-left, play left, down and right freely, and treat "up" as a move you make only when you have no alternative. Almost every collapsed board starts with one unnecessary upward slide.
- Keep the big row full. An edge row of 512-256-128-64 is stable; the same row with a gap in it invites a new 2 to spawn in the middle of your chain and break it.
- Empty cells are the real resource. Merge to create space, not just to score. A board with six free cells has options; a board with one free cell is one bad spawn from finishing.
- Restart early, not late. If your largest tile is stranded in the middle with small tiles on both sides, the run is usually already over — starting again costs less than grinding it out.
